Aude — transitive verb : dare Te — personal pronoun: ego, self
Noscere — verb: get to know, learn, become cognizant of

Why Aude te noscere? Put simply, the entire premise of AT4Y.ca is that we cannot become wise without personal growth or challenge.

The birth of a phrase

Latin, like Spanish, are languages I had the opportunity to learn in high school which in my infinite wisdom at the time passed on both. High school in the 70’s didn’t provide much context for anything so it was up to the learner’s sphere of influence to make informed decisions about course choice — of which there were numerous options. Decades, and a million km of travel later, I really wish I was fluent in both. Spanish for the sake of travel and Latin for the sake of research. [Believe it or not, I did study a year of Greek translation in college].

Ever noticed how many movies feature a Latin phrase?

The Matrix (womb) is riddled with them. The most famous is when Neo (no) meets the Oracle (oraculum) and reads the sign “Temet Nosce” (know thyself) hanging in the kitchen. See the resemblance to mine?

Then there is the famous Robin Williams scene in the Dead Poets Society where he explains Carpe Diem (Seize the day). But one of the most outrageously hilarious scenes came from Monty Python’s Life…
