DCD Lesson 1B: How do you think people learn?
Chances are you have thought quite a bit about how people teach, but what about how they learn? This question goes FAR beyond the idea of ‘learning styles’ and focuses more about your Philosophy of Learning.
How do you think people learn from you?
Push vs Pull
Most of us are aware of ‘push & pull’ media. Push is what the channel or portal wants you to look at. Pull are those people or organizations you choose to subscribe to. But do many educators inadvertently do the same with teaching content?
Do your learners have to follow a certain linear path to completion, or can they jump around based on their interests? Granted, a lot of material does need some sequential absorption for understanding. But what about the rest?
Is most public education ‘PUSH’ content? Are there ways to create ‘PULL’ content to achieve the same outcomes? Are your lessons set up in a push or pull approach? Yes, certain non-LMS portals are by default ‘PULL’. But what about your recorded banter during a lesson? Does it start each lesson with an assumption the learner has completed all previous lessons? Or can you refer back and forth to other lessons highlighting any connections?
