Midway through 2018 my LinkedIn connections were growing exponentially. I was up to about 15,000 from only a few thousand in early 2016 which meant I was beginning to get some very interesting people writing to me. One such person was from the UK. She was trying to set up her own learning portal using Moodle specifically for freelance people to put their courses on. I took a look at the portal and though it had some real issues, but decided it was a good chance to practice and see if I could actually put my Challenge #5 Workshop into a course format using this particular version of Moodle.

One amazing side effect of this project is that when you work with many different online portals you get a chance to see what works well and what doesn’t. This includes formatting guidelines and limitations, test question types and limitations, assignment logistics and limitations, along with differing image and video specs. This was especially true in 2019 when I moved the whole course over to Udemy from the UK group — meaning I had to make a number of changes to fit the Udemy format. These days I am at a point where I could pretty much design the ultimate freelance portal, just looking for somebody to fund it.

For the course I was able to put together and deliver some short graphic-oriented videos with voiceover that addressed all the main points from the research. One of the main reasons I switched to udemy (other than better exposure) was the UK portal was quite picky about using low resolution images and video. I guess they were worried about bandwidth, but it seemed odd in the days of fiber.

Developing the 5_STAR course was an interesting exercise to have to go through to force me into doing what I planned to do anyway, but a little sooner! An additional interesting aspect of this project was making sure the eBook, the workshop and the course all aligned. My idea was to potentially use the course as an up sell via a link from the ebook. Thus the need for congruency.

NOTE: I am currently working on an LMS challenge series for my YT channel, please share with me your LMS trials, tribulations and triumphs.
