Around mid-March (2019) I finally got all the videos for Project 1 of ID-4-edu (Indesign for Educators) finished. ALL 3.5 hours of it! It was broken up into different modules and learning blocks as it was designed to be a step-by-step ‘how to make your own portfolio’ series. I did however create a simplified version of the portfolio for people to learn from.

The idea of using this as project 1 was that if they wanted to do their own portfolio later, it would be easy for them to use my template and include their own content.

But it really laid the foundation skills for what would be a project 2. (Which is in the beginning stages of production as I post this.)

Getting this project ready took IMMENSE time and energy! The number of hours to film and edit to produce 3.5 hours of effective teaching video was approximately 30–40 hours. Some takes needed to be recorded multiple times which resulted in a massive amount of reviewing and editing hours of video. The scope was a bit daunting, but I persisted.

Add the fact that I was doing all the talking-head shots on my mobile phone while simultaneously screen capturing what was happening in InDesign on the computer meant that I had to do everything twice. In that I had to record, convert, review, edit and add effects to both sets of video — once I synced them up. In other words, 30 hours of filming, times two sources, equals over 60 hours of processing.

Compounding all of this effort was the fact that I decided to create this as a course long after I created the initial portfolio. This means I had to re-learn how I created certain elements, modify others, and frame it all as a ‘how to’. Luckily for this last part I had been making notes as I watched others Indesign or Premiere Pro tutorials about what was and was not useful and tried to incorporate much of this into my own course design.

Though I had created hundreds of hours of online / blended learning content, this project was much more technical — detailed technical — than anything I had done previously. Especially as an underlying assumption was that learners had NO previous experience with InDesign. Which meant many small details needed to be explained or put into context in the early Learning Blocks.

What has been your experience creating HIGHLY TECHNICAL online tutorials?
