[‘May the 4th be with you’ edition]

One of the most iconic scenes of the original Star Wars trilogy was in The Empire Strikes Back. It takes place on the forest Planet which is the home of Yoda. And this is where Luke is starting his training to become a true Jedi.

It’s a scene where he walks by a cave, stops and looks into the cave, and then looks at Yoda. Yoda responds with, ‘There is much evil in that cave’. Luke picks up his belt with his Blaster to enter the cave. Yoda says he will not need the weapons. Luke ignores him and goes in. So this is the scene obviously where he confronts the vision of Darth Vader and knocks off the head. When the mask face explodes it’s Luke’s face within Darth Vader’s helmet.

Now when I first saw this film decades ago, you have no idea what this means or foreshadows. Yes, there’s been many different projections of what this was supposed to mean. But you don’t know what it means until it comes to the finale of the movie of the great reveal, ‘Luke I am your father’.

In reality I think this is referring to Jung’s dark side or Shadow Self. Yoda at that time knew who Vader was, but had not told Luke. So the real meaning about the whole cave scene as I see it is that — Luke, if you are not careful, you can end up like your father, following on the dark…
